WOLF CREEK HERITAGE MUSEUM NOTES
by Virginia Scott

MUSEUM HAPPENINGS

This time of year is always a period of calm followed by hurry up and get things done. We are experiencing this at the museum. One minute we are calm and working relaxed the next we have a museum full of people enjoying the museum and telling us things about our collection and county that we have never heard before. Luckily for me the above happened to Lovella this week. She had visitors from Kansas with information on a photographer named Steele that apparently took photographs in our area in the 1800's and early 1900's. So state tuned for more information on yet another photographer.

The Wednesday crew is still combing through our old newspapers and books. We have just about completed our review of the old books and will have a lot of them available to the public in January.

Hope you have a great THANKSGIVING. We will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Lovella will be back Friday.

HISTORICAL MUSINGS

In reviewing the Follett High School newspapers, we found articles on the Panther Boxing Team in the 1940's. The Boxing Team participated in both Scholastic tournaments and the Golden Gloves Tournaments. In 1940 on December 12, The Follett High School hosted the second annual Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament with over 200 entries. The participants competed in 135 bouts over a three day run. Lefors Team won first place with Stinnett winning second. Three Follett Boxers won silk robes and advanced to the tournament held in Fort Worth. These were Dave Yauck, Glenard Elmore, and Eldan Jones, Follett. Pete Wilson of Darrouzett also placed. The coach for the team who organized the event was J. L. Milam. Toby Waggoner, former coach at Canadian was the referee for the AAU division of the tournament.
