WOLF CREEK HERITAGE MUSEUM NOTES
by Virginia Scott

MUSEUM HAPPENINGS

Keep your fingers cross and hope that Spring is here. It has been a little rocky weather this past week and we have to admit that we play it safe. If the weather starts looking stormy, we send everyone home and close the museum with a note for whom to call if you need access. We hope people will understand and we live in town and can open if needed.

We are continuing our genealogy research and Kellie is instructing Mary and Myra the PastPerfect computer program for our collection records. This is so we have back up resources.

One area of the museum that our visitors are impress with is our meeting and research area. Our meeting room which will hold up to 100 is available for a donation. So if you are planning a family reunion this summer come see us.

We will not have Bingo this month due to May 25th Memorial Day Holiday.

HISTORICAL MUSINGS

In the May 15, 1919 issue of LimeLight, it reported the following from the United States Department of Agriculture survey of highway improvement and conditions :
  1. A decrease in the cost of hauling produce to town and provisions and supplies from the town to the farm.
  2. Use of road every day in the year, in weather good or bad.
  3. Increase in the value of farm lands
  4. Opportunity for successful truck or dairy farming because of ability to transport those products to market centers.
  5. Better schools through more money from taxation because of higher land values resultant from the roads.
  6. Daily rural mail delivery
  7. Opportunity to become better acquainted with one’s neighbors and have some sort of social life in farming communities through interchange of visits.

The survey was conducted to show how the tax rate for road improvements assists the individual farms and to show the population that the temporary inconvenience of road construction is worth the long term benefits.
