WOLF CREEK HERITAGE MUSEUM NOTES by Virginia Scott MUSEUM HAPPENINGS This week, I am celebrating my 23rd year of writing this column solo, previously going way back Mildred Becker wrote a column starting in 1986 and Lovella Theissen has taken a turn. We appreciate the newspapers that let us tell about our happenings and our history and we appreciate everyone reading the column. This last week was a busy one with two functions on Saturday morning and afternoon and Bingo night on Saturday evenings. Our featured artist, Pine Gregory had his reception with over 35 people in attendance. His exhibit will be on display till the end of November. This Saturday, November 4, will be our fundraiser at the Lipscomb School. Tickets are $25 each. Activities are live and silent auction with lots of great items some from Lipscomb artists like Robert Rogers, Lillie Montgomery, and Sam Sidders. Our guest speaker is Tracy Janell Andrews with topic of Turtle Trackers. HISTORICAL MUSINGS As we approach a change in our seasons, I found the following in Limelight Nov. 1, 1917 issue: "Monday morning the first thing that greeted all of us folk arising from the slumbers that were so pleasant was nothing more than a blanket of snow. Whew and the way the coal went to the stove wasn't a bit slow and then the warmth was a slow process. The entire day appeared of the same class and from one looking out upon the streets would impress a person that they were in close proximity to the north pole. It was cold, the thermometer going down from 14 to 15 degrees below zero at different places so the reports are handed in. The snow, however, did not stay upon old Mother Earth long, not any more than the day, but ouch, what a frost." There was no mention of trick or treating. I will try to research this tradition for next week. Hope everyone had a good time with all the little and not so little goblins. |
