WOLF CREEK HERITAGE MUSEUM NOTES
by Virginia Scott

MUSEUM HAPPENINGS

This is the last week for the museum for the year 2016. We will have one volunteer at the museum thru December 2. Call before coming down to make sure we are open. We will be closing early on some days.

We have a new environmental filter installed in our work space that will catch the debris from the old newspaper and uniforms, etc. when they are brought into the museum. This keeps the mold, etc. from infecting our collections. We also had filters installed in our air conditioning units that filter the museums. This will keep our environment and collections clean.

We still need ideas for next year. Exhibits and programs. Let us know what your ideas are. The board will meet in January to complete the calendar, hopefully.

HISTORICAL MUSINGS

One of the traditional dishes served on Thanksgiving is cranberries, cranberry sauce, or cranberry jelly. It was served on the first Thanksgiving. The Indians used the fruit to treat infections. They also used the juice to dye their rugs and blankets. They taught the colonists how to cook the berries with sweetener and water to make a sauce. The Indians called it ibimi which means bitter berry. When the colonists saw it, they named it "crane-berry" because the flowers of the berry bent the stalk over, and it resembled the long-necked bird called a crane. The berries are still grown in New England. Very few people know, however, that before the berries are put in bags to be sent to the rest of the country, each individual berry must bounce at least four inches high to make sure they are not too ripe. HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND WE WILL SEE YOU IN JANUARY.
