WOLF CREEK HERITAGE MUSEUM NOTES

MUSEUM HAPPENINGS

A nice group for Genealogy meeting. Myra played a tutorial on researching our ancestors from the DAR Library and then we worked on our charts, etc. A good meeting.
We are still working on our annual reports and trying to finish the annual reports but we keep getting side-tracked so it may take a while before we get it all put together.

Our reception for the student art exhibit is scheduled for February 24 at 2 pm. Please plan to attend and help us recognize and support our students for their artistic efforts. There are a lot of interesting and talented pieces this year. It amazes me how the students can draw our local wildlife, horses, cattle, etc.

HISTORICAL MUSINGS

This week we are commemorating Black History week and celebrating "Valentine's Day." February the 14th was named "Valentine's Day" by Sain Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 in honor of Valentine, a Christian priest who was beheaded on February 14 because he was a Christian and he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the jailer's daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailer's daughter a farewell letter, signing it " From your Valentine."
It is also a Roman Holiday, held in honor of a goddess. Young men randomly chose the name of a young girl to escort to the festivities. The custom of choosing a sweetheart on this date spread through Europe and then to the early American colonies. Throughout the ages people also believed that birds picked their mates on February 14.
It is one of the most observed holidays and most commercial.

Frederic Douglas birthday is recognized on the 14th although his actual birthdate is uncertain: "I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their age as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant." His birth year is recognized as 1817.

Enjoy the week and make someone your valentine.
